스펠링 비의 역사

스펠링 비는 19세기 미국 전역에서 표준 철자법 학습을 장려하기 위해 시작되었습니다. 초기에는 개별 학교와 마을 단위로 개최되었으며, 전국 대회로 조직되지 않았습니다. 1908년, 미국 교육 협회(NEA)는 클리블랜드에서 최초의 전국 스펠링 비 대회를 개최했습니다. 이후 1925년, The Courier-Journal 신문사가 매년 열리는 미국 전국 스펠링 비 대회를 창설했습니다. 이 대회의 첫 번째 우승자는 11세의 프랭크 노이하우저(Frank Neuhauser)였습니다.

현재 미국에서는 지역 대회에서부터 Scripps National Spelling Bee까지 다양한 수준의 대회가 열리며, 우승자에게는 상금이 수여됩니다. 이 대회는 영어 신문사와 교육 기관의 후원을 받아 진행되며, ESPN과 ABC를 통해 방송됩니다.

스펠링 비 대회는 단어 철자법뿐만 아니라 언어 규칙, 어원, 올바른 발음을 익히는 데 도움을 줍니다. 스펠링 비 챔피언이 되려면 계획적인 전략이 필요하며, 정기적인 연습, 단어 패턴 학습, 기억력 및 집중력 향상이 필수적입니다.

Learning Planet Spelling Bee (LPSB)

Is your child a literature enthusiast?  Do you want your child to excel at vocabulary and be confident in spelling words? If your answer is yes, then participation in spelling bee competitions will boost your child’s confidence. 

Spelling bees became widespread across the United States during the 19th century as a way to motivate students to learn standardized spelling. They were usually held in individual schools and towns, and were not nationally organized. In 1908, the National Education Association (NEA) held what it called the first national spelling bee at its convention in Cleveland, Ohio. The annual United States National Spelling Bee was started in 1925 by The Courier-Journal. The winner was Frank Neuhauser, age 11, who won the 1st National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. in 1925. In the US, spelling bees are annually held from local levels up to the level of the Scripps National Spelling Bee, which awards a cash prize to the winner. The National Spelling Bee is sponsored by English-language newspapers and educational foundations; it is also broadcast on ESPN. Since 2006, the National Spelling Bee’s championship rounds have been broadcast on ABC live.

Spelling bee competitions challenge participants to spell a wide array of words, often requiring a deep understanding of language rules, word origins, and correct pronunciation. A student needs a planned strategy to be a spelling bee champion, including regular practice, studying word patterns, and improving their memory and concentration skills.
